CW Gets the Message Through in Wake of Hurricane Irma:

Any CW operator worth his or her salt will tell you that CW is the mode that gets through when all others fall short of the mark. CW certainly did the job for Chet Hogue, N3BK, who handled dozens of messages for residents of Florida's Lower Keys in the days following Hurricane Irma in September.

"A message from a Big Pine Key man to his girlfriend, who evacuated with their young daughter and was waiting to hear how he weathered the storm, was one of about 80 sent out over the airwaves by ham radio enthusiast Chet Hogue in the days following Irma's destruction," reporter Katie Atkins wrote in The Keynoter in describing Hogue's activity.

"Things here are still incredibly a mess!" Hogue told ARRL this week.

The Summerland Key charter captain, known as "Captain Chester," weathered the storm in place. He noted that the primary frequencies handling traffic were quite busy, so he got on CW, which, he told Atkins, allowed him "to relay messages clearly." Listen for JOTA stations, and help to introduce some Scouts to Amateur Radio. JOTA uses Amateur Radio to link Scouts and hams around the world, around the nation, and in communities. ARRL 2018 Puerto Rico State Convention Cancelled: The Organizing Committee for the 2018 ARRL Puerto Rico State Convention has announced the cancellation of the 2018 convention, set for January 26-28, 2018, in Hatillo. 2018 Convention Chairman Juan "Coki" Montijo, WP4OV, explained that the convention site, the Pancho Deida Coliseum, was damaged and unlikely to be ready in time for the convention. "We would like to take advantage of this opportunity to thank all of the Puerto Rico ham radio operators who have been involved in this recovery effort, and the volunteers from ARRL who have been working alongside in the aftermath of the storm," he added. "We look forward to our 2019 convention."

David Trachtenberg, N4WWL, Confirmed as Principal Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Policy: The US Senate this week confirmed ARRL member David Trachtenberg, N4WWL, of Burke, Virginia, as the next Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. Trachtenberg, 60, is the president and CEO of Shortwaver Consulting LLC, a national security consultancy. He is National Planning Coordinator and Northeast Division Director for USAF MARS, and is active in the Pentagon Amateur Radio Club (PARC http://www.k4af.org/). Trachtenberg has prior service in several Department of Defense posts, most recently as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy. When all else fails, amateur (HAM) radio works

Over the last week, wildfires have been raging across most of the state of California.

On Wednesday, one of my life-long best friends named Donna, who lives about an hour south of San Francisco, Calif., and some of the fires out there, had internet but no phone service in her town of Belmont, California.

Donna posted two photos commenting: "This is the smoke in the Bay Area! Smells like a bonfire. The firestorm is about an hour away. We are fine here, but in the northern Bay Area there are 115,000 acres destroyed and fire is still raging. Praying for their safety "

Seeing that, I posted a reply expressing my happiness at finding out she and her family were alive and well. But I also wanted to offer any help I could provide, be it from my tiny town of Waldoboro, Maine, over 3,000 miles away, even without my having a currently set-up FM radio rig and antenna that could reach her.

Ham Radio Bridging the Gap in Wildfire-Stricken California

UPDATED: 2017-10-12 @ 1840 UTC] More than a dozen wildfires in Northern California have damaged or destroyed cellular telephone and Internet infrastructure in some areas, and Amateur Radio has helped to fill the communication gap. Mendocino County Sheriff Thomas Allman told news media on October 10 that damage to cell towers and fiber optic telephone phone and computer lines had left officials relying on Amateur Radio operators to communicate with area hospitals.

ARRL contacted Robin Carter, a resident of the Willits area in Mendocino County, who confirmed to ARRL that ham radio operators until midweek were stationed at all North County hospitals and large nursing homes, supplementing the county’s emergency communication system. She said cell and landline telephone service was knocked out at her home, along with the fiber optic Internet connection, although the family has satellite Internet, and conventional Internet service was at least temporarily restored on Wednesday.

If a disaster were to occur, would you and your family be prepared to evacuate, meet up at a predetermined location, and have enough supplies to feed everyone for a week or more?

Area residents are invited to attend the free Annual Community Preparedness Fair on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Harkins Theatres parking lot just north of Buffalo Wild Wings in Prescott Valley.

“The Goodwin Fire was a very personal reminder about the need to be prepared as individuals and communities,” said Ryan Judy, coordinator of this year’s event. “This fair brings together many of the agencies that would help coordinate a disaster response in our area.”

The event will also help people to not have to rely so much on government agencies, Judy added.

The General Membership Meeting will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, September 13th in Room 2424 at the University of Michigan’s Space Research Building.

This month’s presentation topic is “Ham Radio Mesh Networks”. We will talk about ham radio mesh networks specifically, AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network). There has been renewed interest in the Club to build a mesh network in the area and we have toyed with this idea a few years back using HSMM-Mesh but never discussed it in detail. HSMM-Mesh is no longer in development and AREDN is being used predominantly all over the world. If you have any experience with ARDEN and mesh networks, in general, your input will be valuable and if you have a device with the firmware loaded please do bring it to the meeting. We will watch a presentation and then discuss further on how to implement if there are enough of us willing to put up the nodes.

FCC Approves Google Project Loon for Hurricane-Devastated Puerto Rico

NEWS ANALYSIS: The Federal Communications Commission has approved a license to enable Google's X unit to set up its Project Loon communications system to provide emergency cell service to hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico. 

First, it was the hams. In the terrifying aftermath of Hurricane Maria, the only communications available to residents came from the few ham radio operators who were able to get their equipment running because they had generators to provide power.

Phone service on the island did not exist. The government had some communications, but that was being used for official business including waging Tweet wars with Washington.

For everyone else, to get word out about emergency conditions, you had to walk. The roads were blocked by debris. There was no fuel. When the airport reopened and flights resumed, volunteers began to arrive with their radios and generators. But Puerto Rico is a large island and roads were still impassable and bridges washed out. The ham radio operators provided a vital service, but it was not nearly enough...

Queens School's Amateur Radio Club Offers Messaging Lifeline to Puerto Rico - Jackson Heights - New York - DNAinfo

JACKSON HEIGHTS — Inside the tiny amateur radio room inside the
Garden School's second-floor library, students fiddle with dials and
listen for voices being transmitted from around the world.



The school's radio club, which has grown to around 20 members since
launching last year, has competed in contests and learned all about
operating ham radios from inside the 78th Street school.



Now, the extracurricular activity has taken a more urgent mission for students.



The station — known by its call sign, K2GSG — is taking messages
known as "radiograms" to send down to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico,
which has been mostly without power since Hurricane Maria struck the
island.

Ham radio class offered in Manchester

An introductory Ham radio class will be offered on Saturday, Nov.
11, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Manchester Red Cross Blood Center,
425 Reservoir Ave., Manchester.

Ham radio, or amateur radio,
allows people to communicate via radio over distances up to thousands of
miles. Unlike phones, amateur radio does not rely on a network that can
go down in critical times. Ham radio allows the user to speak to many
people, either individually, or all at once. Ham Radio forms a large
community network, much like Facebook and there's no bill at the end of
the month.

There are more than 5,000 amateur operators in New
Hampshire. Some local amateur operators provide tactical communications
for the Boston Marathon each year.

Before anyone can transmit,
they must receive an FCC license. A test is given to prove basic
understanding rules and regulations, safety and basic electronics.
Knowledge of Morse code is no longer required. The class will provide
training for the first license level. Students can continue upgrading
with a course on the next day. Demonstrations of amateur radio operation
will be shown throughout the day.

The class is open to everyone across New Hampshire and the surrounding area but advance registration is required.
